BAGHDAD, IRAQ (BNO NEWS) — A series of bomb blasts killed at least 35 people across Iraq on Tuesday, including 29 at a vegetable market in the country’s south, local authorities said on Wednesday. More than 100 others were injured.
The deadliest attack took place at a vegetable market in Al Diwaniyah, the provincial capital of Al-Qadisiyyah, located around 160 kilometers (100 miles) south of Baghdad, the Iraqi capital. It happened when an explosive device planted in a parked truck detonated, killing 29 people and injuring around 70 others.
Al-Qadisiyyah provincial officials imposed a curfew in Diwaniyah following the deadly attack, which completely destroyed more than two dozen local shops.
In Karbala, a city about 100 kilometers (62 miles) southwest of Baghdad, at least five people were killed and 45 others were injured when two car bombs targeted Shiite pilgrims at an outdoor market. Another car bomb explosion near a mosque in northern Baghdad killed one person and injured five others.
United Nations (UN) Special Representative of the Secretary-General and head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Martin Kobler, strongly condemned the series of attacks. “I am deeply saddened by the atrocious attacks on civilians and pilgrims and the continuing suffering inflicted on the Iraqi people by those who wish to derail efforts to achieve stability and prosperity in Iraq,” he said.
