The incident occurred at around 8.49 p.m. local time when a massive gust of wind brought down an outdoor stage that was set up for a concert by the country music band Sugarland at the state fairgrounds. Dozens of concert-goers rushed to lift the wreckage and help those trapped underneath.

“The winds came, the big dust storm moved from the west and, no sooner than that, hit. The winds hit and the canopy over the stage was just like a big sail. It just picked it up, twisted it and right on top of everybody standing in front of the stage,” one witness told WTHR 13.

Indiana State Police First Sergeant Dave Bursten said five people were killed while 45 others were transported to hospitals with injuries ranging from cuts and bruises to fractures and severe head trauma. The youngest victim to be injured was a seven-year-old child.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the youngest fatality as 23-year-old Alina Bigjohny from Wayne, Indiana. The other fatalities were identified as 42-year-old Tammy Vandam of Wanatah, Indiana, 49-year-old Glenn Goodrich of Indianapolis, 29-year-old Christina Santiago of Chicago, and 51-year-old Nathan Byrd of Indianapolis.

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels expressed condolences to the families of the victims of the tragedy. “Indiana and the nation’s finest state fair suffered an unthinkable tragedy last night. Our first and final thoughts today will be with those we’ve lost and the families and friends of those we’ve lost in this terrible accident,” he said.

Sugarland posted a brief message on their Twitter account after the accident, saying: “We are all right. We are praying for our fans, and the people of Indianapolis. We hope you’ll join us. They need your strength.”

According to the National Weather Service, which had issued a severe thunderstorm warning 10 minutes before the accident happened, winds are estimated to having been between 60 to 70 miles (96 to 112 kilometers) per hour at the time of the accident, which is near hurricane strength. Preparations were being made to evacuate the area when the stage collapsed.

“The coordinating investigative agency is the Indiana State Police,” said Bursten. “Other investigative agencies are the Indiana Attorney General’s Office, the Marion County Coroner’s Office, the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Indiana Occupational Health and Safety Administration. Each agency will be investigating within the scope of their area of expertise.”

The Indiana State Fair is closed on Sunday but will resume at 8 a.m. local time on Monday with a Remembrance Ceremony at the Free Stage in the northwest corner of the fairgrounds.

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department said Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics arrived at the Comfort Inn hotel in Woodlands Hill, a district of Los Angeles, at approximately 5.30 p.m. local time after a 9-1-1 call was received.

“When emergency personnel arrived, the Fire Department pronounced the death of a 47-year-old man, later identified as Jani Lane, the lead singer of the popular rock band Warrant,” a police spokesperson said. “The cause of death is unknown and the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office is conducting an investigation into Mr. Lane’s death.”

Born John Kennedy Oswald in Akron, Ohio, Lane is probably best remembered for being the frontman of glam metal band ‘Warrant,’ which was formed in 1984 by Erik Turner. In 1986, Lane joined the group, recording eight albums with the band and writing several Top 40 hit singles, including ‘Heaven,’ ‘Down Boys,’ ‘I Saw Red,’ and ‘Cherry Pie.’

Lane left Warrant in 1993 but returned on several occasions to record a number of more albums while beginning his solo career. He also appeared in a couple of short-budget films, including 1991s ‘High Strung.’ Lane, who remained active and even toured last year with Great White, substituting for singer Jack Russell, was also featured in VH1′s ‘Celebrity Fit Club 2′ in 2005.

LONDON (BNO NEWS) — An autopsy conducted on singer Amy Winehouse on Monday afternoon failed to establish a formal cause of death, Scotland Yard said.

A brief statement from Scotland Yard on Monday afternoon said the autopsy, which took place at St. Pancras Mortuary in London, was inconclusive as “it did not establish a formal cause of death and we await the results of further toxicology tests.” The results of these tests are expected in 2 to 4 weeks.

Winehouse died on Saturday afternoon and was found deceased in bed by a security guard who had been appointed to look after her. “He called the emergency services straight away. He was very shocked. At this stage no one knows how she died. She died alone in bed,” Winehouse friend Chris Goodman told TMZ.com on Sunday.

In a statement released on Sunday, the family of Winehouse said her sudden death leaves a ‘gaping hole’ in their lives. “Our family has been left bereft by the loss of Amy, a wonderful daughter, sister, niece. She leaves a gaping hole in our lives,” the statement said. “We are coming together to remember her and would appreciate some privacy and space at this terrible time.”

As the autopsy on her body has now been performed, Winehouse will be buried at an undisclosed location during a private ceremony on Tuesday.

Winehouse’s final show was in Belgrade in June where she was booed by fans after a disastrous performance. The Grammy-winning singer also appeared briefly on stage with her goddaughter Dionne Bromfield at the iTunes festival on Wednesday night.

Last month, after the Belgrade incident, Winehouse cancelled all scheduled performances after a series of erratic public appearances. The ‘Rehab’ singer had a long history of substance abuse throughout her career.

LONDON (BNO NEWS) — An autopsy to determine what killed singer Amy Winehouse will not be scheduled before Monday morning, Scotland Yard said on Sunday. The circumstances around her death remain unclear.

A police spokesperson confirmed on Sunday that it was called to Winehouse’s home in London at around 4.05 p.m. local time on Saturday following reports that a woman was found deceased. “On arrival, officers found the body of Amy Winehouse, 27,” police said.

Police said Winehouse’s death is being treated as unexplained at this early stage, and noted that no arrests have been made as of Sunday. “A date and time for the post-mortem (autopsy) will not be scheduled before Monday morning,” police said.

LONDON (BNO WIRE) — British singer Amy Winehouse has been found dead at her home in north London, police confirmed on Saturday.

Sky News reported that the 27-year-old singer was found dead by the emergency services. The London Ambulance Service was called to her home in Camden just after 4 p.m., but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

“On arrival, officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene,” a police statement said. Her death was reportedly being treated as ‘unexplained’ and inquiries are continuing into the circumstances, it added.

LOS ANGELES (BNO NEWS) — Singers Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony on Friday announced that, after seven years of marriage, they have decided to divorce. The news was first reported by People.com.

In a joint statement, the couple gave no details about the reason for their divorce. “We have decided to end our marriage. This was a very difficult decision. We have come to an amicable conclusion on all matters,” the couple said, as reported by People.com.

“It is a painful time for all involved, and we appreciate the respect of our privacy at this time,” the couple added in their statement. They were married in June 2004 during a secret ceremony at Lopez’s Beverly Hills home.

Lopez, 41, and Anthony, 42, have two children, 3-year-old twins Max and Emme.

SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) — American actor Roberts Blossom, who is best known for playing ‘old man Marley’ in the 1990s comedy “Home Alone”, has died in California. He was 87.

The actor died on July 8 at a nursing home in Santa Monica, his daughter Deborah told the New York Times. KTLA-TV on Thursday said that Blossom died of natural causes.

Blossom, who was born in Connecticut in 1924, played roles in more than 50 movies and TV series. He won a Soapy Award for Favorite Villain in 1978 for his role in the 1964 movie “Another World”.

But Blossom was best known for his role as the snow-shoveling ‘Old Man Marley’ in the 1990s Christmas comedy film ‘Home Alone’. The movie remains one of the highest grossing live-action comedies of all time.

Blossom, whose first marriage ended in divorce and the second with the death of Marylin Orshan in 1982, is survived by daughter Deborah and son Michael.

According to authorities, Cabral was heading from his hotel to the airport in Guatemala City when unidentified gunmen attacked his car, killing him and injuring concert promoter and driver of the car Henry Fariña.

Interior Minister Carlos Menocal said Cabral had planned to take the airport shuttle provided by the hotel, but changed plans last night after accepting a ride from Fariña. Menocal added that the attackers were aiming for the concert promoter.

Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom blamed people involved in organized crime since the attack looked like a “well-planned operation.” He also announced three days of official mourning.

The 74-year-old singer gave his last concert in the city of Quetzaltenango, 200 kilometers (120 miles) west of Guatemala city, on Thursday.

The death of one of Latin America’s most famous folk singers caused outraged and grief around the world. He was recognized in 1996 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization as a “World Peace Messenger.”

The Jakarta Globe reported that Erwin Arnada was released on Friday afternoon from East Jakarta’s Cipinang Penitentiary, where he had been detained since October for public indecency. The former editor said his release from prison marks a victory for press freedom in the country.



“My release is proof that freedom of the press in Indonesia is still respected, and I hope there will be no other journalists prosecuted as I have been under the Criminal Code,” he said outside the prison’s gates, while wearing a T-shirt reading: “Journalism is not a crime.”



”I do not feel that I have become a victim or a hero. I feel that I have become part of Indonesian history in fighting for freedom of the press. And I believe the statement on my T-shirt explains more than what I just said.” 



Conservative Muslim groups pressed charges of public indecency against Erwin in 2007, shortly after the launch of the local version of Playboy, which did not feature nudity. He was later acquitted by the South Jakarta District Court.

However, on appeal, the Supreme Court overturned the ruling in 2009 and sentenced Erwin to two years in jail. In May, the court overturned its own ruling, yet an official copy of the decision only reached Erwin’s lawyer this week.

A statement released by his family said Falk died peacefully at his home in Beverly Hills, California. It gave no details about the cause of his death, but the actor had long been suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Falk was nominated for an Academy Award twice, one for the 1960 movie ‘Murder, Inc.’ and another for the 1961 comedy film ‘Pocketful of Miracles.’ He also won five Emmy Awards, four of them for his role in ‘Columbo.’

Falk’s final film appearance was in the 2009 movie ‘American Cowslip,’ bringing to an end his 50-year career. He is survived by his wife, Shera, of 34 years and two daughters from a previous marriage.

Dunn died at around 3:30 p.m. local time alongside ‘Jackass Number Two’ production assistant Zachary Hartwell, after his Porsche 911 GT3 hit a tree in West Goshen Township, Pennsylvania when he lost control of the vehicle and came off the road.

According to West Goshen Police Chief Michael Carroll, Dunn’s blood alcohol content (BAC) was .196 at the time of the accident, which is more than twice the .08 legal amount established by the state of Pennsylvania, the Daily Local reported. In addition, investigations determined that he was driving his vehicle between 132 and 140 miles per hour in a 55 miles per hour zone.

Dunn, who was 34 at the time of his death, was originally of Medina, Ohio and later moved to West Chester, Pennsylvania. He is probably most remembered for being part of the original daredevil crew in MTV’s ‘Jackass,’ but he also participated in other TV shows including ‘Viva La Bam,’ and hosted ‘Homewrecker’ and ‘Proving Ground.’

Stodden was previously a contestant for Miss Washington Teen USA 2010 but lost the race to 17-year-old Camilla Cyr. She is also a self-described “upcoming recording artist that writes her own music” and a model, as well as a dancer.

Some questioned whether the marriage was legal because of Stodden’s young age, but Nevada state law allows teens under the age of 18 to marry with parental consent. “We are totally supportive of this marriage,” Courtney’s mother Krista Stodden told Radar Online, confirming that at least one parent had to sign the permission form for the marriage to take place.

In a YouTube video uploaded by Stodden in December 2010, she describes herself as a Christian girl and said she did not want to have sex until she got married. “About myself; I am a Christian girl. I hold my faith very tightly, and I’m a virgin. And I plan to stay that way until I’m married,” she said.

Even though the age of consent in California, where they will live, is 18, this does not apply when the minor was legally married in any U.S. state.

Conaway, of New York, was found unconscious on May 11 at his Encino, California home. Initial reports indicated that the cause was due to overdosing from painkillers. However, the actor’s substance abuse doctor, Drew Pinsky, later diagnosed Conaway with pneumonia and sepsis.

According to Conaway’s representative Phil Brock, the actor had been facing back problems, which he had been treating with pain killers, but after the May 11 incident, he was transferred to the Encino Tarzana Medical Center, where he never regained consciousness until his death.

On Thursday afternoon, Conaway was taken off life support under the supervision of his family.

Conaway began his acting career in Broadway at the early age of two, and in 1978, he starred alongside John Travolta in the motion picture musical ‘Grease.’ He portrayed Travolta’s rebel sidekick Kenickle.

Shortly after, Conaway began portraying the role of Bobby Wheeler in TV hit series ‘Taxi’ from 1978 to 1982. His role would later earn him a Golden Globe Award nomination.

In 2008, Conaway was also featured in reality show ‘Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew,’ where his alcohol and drug addiction became widely known.

The 24-year-old ‘Mean Girls’ actress pled no contest to a misdemeanor theft charge last month and was found to be in violation of the terms of her probation. She was previously sentenced to 120 days in jail, as well as 480 hours of community service, but received no actual jail time.

Lohan instead chose to serve 35 days in home detention with an electronic monitoring program offered through the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Community Based Alternatives to Custody program.

“Lindsay Lohan was booked at 5.02 a.m. today at the Century Regional Detention Facility, and was fitted with an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet and released to serve her time in home detention,” said Steve Whitmore, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office. “Ms. Lohan will be under the supervision of the Sheriff’s Department and her release date is expected to be around June 29. She will serve about 35 days on home detention.”

The booking process that took place on Thursday morning is known as an ‘over-the-counter’ booking, Whitmore explained, and therefore no booking photo was taken.
